Advent Calendar 2021

Gather quickly

Out of darkness

All the songs you know

And throw them at the sun

Before they melt

Like snow

-Langston Hughes

We’re at it again!

Alex Coke (flutes, saxophone) and Elaine Barber (harp) offer you a musical calendar to mark the days of advent while we wait, hope, and anticipate the joys of Christmas. The idea is simple: for $25, you (or someone you gift) will receive an mp3 of us playing a song we like - jazz, classical, Christmas, whatever strikes our fancy - every day from December 1st - 24th. We’ve recorded all new songs this year, music that makes us feel festive, or quiet & full of wonder, or warm & cozy.

Praise for the 2020 Advent calendar:

As we close out this horrific year, it's simple gestures prompting special joy. Growing out of a spontaneous series of weekly driveway performances for their neighbors, saxophone/flutist Alex Coke and harpist Elaine Barber collaborate on a musical Advent calendar that delivers a daily musical treat to its subscribers via email through Dec. 24. "It was Elaine's idea," boasts Coke about his musical partner. "She came up with it right before Thanksgiving." Principal harpist with the Austin Symphony Orchestra, Barber stays busy seasonally with The Nutcracker, but not this year. Redirecting her creative juices to kick-start this project allowed the pair to collaborate on a variety of musical vignettes, resulting in a various styles thus far, including medieval folk, Duke Ellington, Debussy, Appalachian mountain music, and Stevie Wonder, with a special shout-out to harpist Dorothy Ashby, who played on the Wonder original "If It's Magic." "There are so many possibilities, and the format is very simple," says Coke. "We keep it short so you can download and listen on your phone." – Jay Trachtenberg, Austin Chronicle, December 3, 2020

Thanks, Alex! I wanted to tell you and Elaine how much joy and peace your musical Advent calendar brought to my experience of Advent this year. Wow. I found myself beginning each day with your music and my cup of coffee. I will return to those pieces often, I am sure.

Wonderful music. You are hitting all of my buttons.

It just wouldn't be Christmas without a few surprises, right?

A Monk tune i've never heard before now, the best of all possible gifts.

Like a tendril of tender wonder to begin this day...

Your musical advent calendar is a lovely gift

that keeps on giving, thank you both and each for every tune.

Loving the calendar tasty morsels, especially Debussy’s Little Shepherd which kind jerked my tears. Just beautiful on the harp!

Your posting these musical selections was just the balm we all needed.

Thanks for doing the advent pieces. First of all, a brilliant idea. Second, a great introduction to some composers, artists, and pieces I didn’t know. Third, what a different input to the day!!

Thank you. Your musicality and selection of pieces are inspiring!
